Sinhala and Tamil New Year
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is one of the most important festivals in Sri Lanka. πIt is usually celebrated in April and marks the traditional new year for both Sinhalese and Tamil people. This festival is based on the movement of the sun from Pisces to Aries. Families clean their homes and prepare for the new year with happiness.
People follow special rituals at auspicious times, such as lighting the hearth and cooking milk rice. Traditional foods like kavum, kokis, and sweets are prepared in every home. Children wear new clothes and receive gifts from elders. Games like tug of war and pillow fighting bring joy to everyone.
Relatives and friends visit each other and share meals together. It is a time for forgiveness, unity, and new beginnings. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year brings happiness, peace, and prosperity to all Sri Lankans.
